Frequently Asked Questions About Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)
What is Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)?
DEF is a non-hazardous solution of 32.5% high-purity urea and 67.5% deionized water. It’s used in the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems of modern diesel engines, where it’s injected into the exhaust stream to break down harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions into harmless nitrogen and water.
How much DEF does a truck use?
As a rule of thumb, a diesel truck consumes roughly 3–5 litres of DEF for every 100 litres of diesel, about 3% of fuel use. Fleets running long hours can go through DEF quickly, which is why on-site bulk supply saves time and money compared with buying jugs.
Do you deliver DEF near me?
We deliver bulk DEF across Central, Eastern and Northern Ontario, including Barrie, Collingwood, Newmarket, North Bay, Owen Sound and Bracebridge. If you’re not sure whether your location is covered, contact us and we’ll confirm.
Is bulk DEF cheaper than buying jugs or drums?
Yes. Buying DEF in bulk lowers your per-litre cost, cuts down on packaging waste, and means your fluid is always on hand when you need it. We offer both bulk delivery and packaged jugs and drums, so you can choose what fits your operation.
What's the shelf life of DEF?
Stored correctly, in a sealed container, out of direct sunlight, ideally between -11°C and 30°C, DEF has a shelf life of about 12 months. High heat shortens it, so proper storage matters for fleets that buy in volume.
How should DEF be stored on-site?
DEF should be kept in a clean, sealed, approved container (typically HDPE) away from direct sunlight and extreme heat. Contamination is the biggest risk, so dedicated tanks and dispensing equipment are recommended, we supply DEF storage solutions alongside delivery.
Can DEF freeze, and is that a problem?
DEF freezes at about -11°C. Freezing doesn’t damage the fluid, it returns to normal once thawed, and truck SCR systems are designed to handle this. For on-site storage in Ontario winters, insulated or heated tanks keep supply usable year-round.
How do I get a quote for bulk DEF delivery?
You can Request a Quote or call your nearest Lewis Motors location. Let us know your approximate monthly volume and location and we’ll put together fleet pricing.
